Cotton wool clouds drift across a bright blue sky, the brilliant sunlight glinting on the roof of a passing car. All is quiet. Then a loud speaker crackles into life – ‘Good morning everybody! Welcome to Silverstone!’ – and so the familiar greeting of commentator Ian Titchmarsh heralds the start of a new, much anticipated season.
2007 is my fifth year as a marshal on the recovery truck and is a firm fixture in my diary and my life. I really enjoy the excitement, the challenge, and the trip to pub afterwards! I’ve met lots of great people since becoming a marshal, seen some brilliant racing, and enjoy being involved in many interesting recoveries. Interpreting Silverstone, and my experiences there, artistically in original and perhaps rather unconventional ways, has resulted in work that would never have arisen had I not been a marshal.
The Pictureboard idea and work I am currently producing was developed when putting together ideas for a big exhibition montage. These small boards have proved very popular and I love making them! Any combination of images is possible.
Take a look and at my ‘Marks of a Moment’ work which has been exhibited at Silverstone in a huge marquee at the MG Car Club International event, in a Jaguar Car Showroom and in more conventional gallery settings.
Each season brings new challenges and excitements for us on the recovery truck, some of which are reflected both in the photography displayed in the ‘recovery’ gallery and also in the more general marshalling news. Images are added throughout the year. Click here for a list of meetings at Silverstone – details of other circuits can be found on my links page.
Silverstone is a magical place. It has a spirit, presence and beauty, which always surprises me. Just walking around the circuit is a pleasure – set in the heart of the countryside, this huge, historic, estate rolls out, mile after mile, dominated by huge skies, eerily quiet when racing ends, yet filled with a constant buzz of accelerating engines, squealing tyres and, of course, the enthusiastic reporting of the extraordinarily knowledgeable commentators.
