THE ‘METAMORPHOSIS’ PROJECT
(…. Marking Time ….)

The Isles of Scilly; early springtime; we walked along a beautiful beach with no-one else in sight. Bliss. Bending to examine a shell, another small, colourful, object caught my eye. Thinking it was an unusual stone I picked it up and quickly realised that this glinting, opaque treasure was nothing more than a piece of broken glass. So often I would have dropped it back onto the sand, but something about its colour and texture made me look at it more closely. What I saw fascinated me. This discarded fragment had been etched by endless tides turning it into something unique; a man-made object permanently marked by its elemental journey.
I was fascinated by the proximity of this solid object to the sand, signifying its gradual return to its origins. Wandering along I noticed, another piece, then another – each one unique in shape, texture and colour.
We began collecting them and so the ‘metamorphosis’ project was born … in March, on a windy beach in St. Mary’s, Isles of Scilly.
We returned to our hotel and spread out our small collection on the coffee table. Inspired by the individual characteristics - the shapes, the sizes, the colours - images formed in my mind and almost instantly I began assembling work from the pieces.

I particularly love the fact that removing these items from the beach does not present me with an environmental dilemma. These pieces of etched glass are transient, accidental objects, already displaced - their journey has returned them to their origins.
My work with these pieces reflects the places where they were found. Click here to see what is availiable.
